Cancer responsible for 27% of deaths in Azores 2017-2022 – audit court

Oncological disease accounted for 27% of deaths in the Portuguese islands of the Azores between 2017 and 2022, and it is estimated that there will be more than 1,000 new cases of cancer in the region each year, the Court of Auditors (TdC) revealed today. The court also warned that the data on the incidence of cancer in the archipelago is out of date. With regard to cancer mortality, the Azores has recorded the highest (gross and standardised) rates in the country – despite having a younger population profile,” judges point out.
