Cases of corruption drag on for years; most end up being archived

Corruption cases in Portugal take up to eight years to be prosecuted, and the vast majority (75%) end up being archived. These are the conclusions of the National Anti-Corruption Mechanism (MENAC), at a time when the issue has been at the centre of discussion in negotiations between the Minister of Justice and political parties. The majority of criminal proceedings are associated with public entities (93%) and almost half of all prosecutions involve local authorities. The same is true of investigations into abuse of power and/ or malfeasance.
