Castro Marim to build and rehabilitate over 150 houses

Apartments will be built for affordable housing and existing homes will be maintained for families unable to access housing.

The housing crisis in the Algarve and Castro Marim prompted the municipality to create a series of measures to support the construction of 84 new homes and rehabilitate 78 existing ones, as well as family homes, as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan’s 1st Right Programme.

Decent housing will be created for 109 families, apartments will be built for affordable housing, and existing housing will be maintained for families who, while not vulnerable, are unable to access housing due to the national real estate situation.

“In a municipality where we lack affordable housing for families and the City Council is unable to acquire and offer housing for rent, it has been a challenging journey to reach this point. If everything is approved, in three years, we will have about 100 families with improved living conditions, happier lives, and renewed motivation, as having a home is a basic necessity”, stated Filomena Sintra, the vice-president of Castro Marim City Council.

“There was a lot of concern about integrating this new reality into the urban areas of Altura and Castro Marim, as well as in more rural areas, such as the housing complex we are proposing in Odeleite. We don’t want to create false expectations at this point, but we believe we are already on track for this to happen in 2027,” she added.

This investment of over 12 million euros, also part of the Local Housing Strategy, could enable the municipality to build 62 additional homes in Castro Marim, 15 in Altura, and seven in Odeleite, for which the processes are already in progress.

The municipality of Castro Marim believes that creating housing and infrastructure is essential to increasing its attractiveness and fighting desertification, particularly in the village of Odeleite.

“I can’t wait to help ease the suffering of families living in overcrowded or undignified conditions, particularly those who are working parents unable to find affordable housing to buy or rent. Our commitment is to continue working so that this can happen. We are also committed to ensuring that families with homes needing rehabilitation receive the necessary support for the work, enabling them to maintain their homes. Along with this strategy, we will also implement regulations to control sales and construction costs. This is our focus, and we will commit our team to this matter”, concluded the mayor.

The registration period for interested parties is expected to open soon, based on forthcoming public regulations.

The Local Housing Strategy and the 1st Right Support Programme for Access to Housing aim to promote suitable housing solutions for individuals or families who live in poor conditions or are in financial need.
