CCTV surveillance system was inaugurated in August
A new CCTV surveillance system installed in the Algarve capital of Faro has already proven its effectiveness by aiding in the resolution of 39 crimes in just three months.
The system, operational since August 27, features 41 cameras strategically placed in 32 locations in the city and represented a municipal investment of over €450,000.
Following the successful results of the surveillance system, the municipal council of Faro and the local PSP police command have agreed to expand the existing system, which is monitored 24 hours per day by PSP police – although no further details regarding this expansion have been revealed so far.
The decision came at a meeting held last week to assess the current state of criminality and safety in the municipality and discuss the impact of the CCTV surveillance system.
According to the PSP, Faro has seen a stabilisation in overall and serious crimes compared to 2023. However, cyber scams, online fraud, opportunistic thefts, and extortion cases – often linked to internet use – remain prevalent, the police force reports. To address these issues and respond to the growing number of residents and tourists in the borough, PSP has intensified patrols and introduced educational initiatives aimed at crime prevention for diverse age and social groups.
The municipal council also aims to strengthen its collaboration with PSP police through regular meetings, coordinated planning for public events, and urban development adjustments. Additionally, Faro’s Municipal Police is expected to begin operations early next year.
