Charity lunch to raise funds for ‘Ambulances for Ukraine’ project

Carvoeiro’s Pashmina restaurant will host a charity lunch this weekend to raise money for ‘Ambulances for Ukraine’, a project which delivers ambulances to Ukraine to evacuate wounded Ukrainian soldiers.

The project has been developed by Roman Grymalyuk from the Oranta charity association, who has already converted 16 vehicles into ambulances which are then driven to Poland to help Ukrainian forces.

Portuguese airline TAP is also supporting the efforts, providing free flights back to Portugal for the drivers who deliver the ambulances. The airline is also providing an additional five vehicles to the project, one of which will be used as a “safe haven for active soldiers”.

To continue its work, Oranta organises charity events to raise much-needed funds, with the next taking place this Sunday (May 12) at 12.30pm in Carvoeiro at Pashmina, an Indian restaurant located near the Alfanzina area.

Price is €33 per person (excluding drinks), with €10 going to the charity, and booking early is highly recommended. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Poor Man’s Band, which regularly performs across the Algarve raising money for charity.

There will also be raffles, auctions, and special prizes on the day, with organisers accepting any donations of articles for the auctions and raffles.

Oranta’s last charity event raised over €10,000, a target that organisers are hoping to beat.

The association was created in 2022 to support Ukraine against Russia’s invasion and to “introduce Ukraine’s cultural heritage to Portuguese society”. One of the biggest events held so far was the Felizonda festival, which took place in Lagos in June 2023 and featured performances by Ukrainian musicians and artists. The association has also been working closely with the Ukrainian Embassy in Portugal.
