Charlie Holt showcases multilayered artwork in Loulé

The mixed-media artist’s “Palimpsest” exhibition will be on show at the Convento de Santo António in Loulé from September 21 to November 2.

British artist Charlie Holt is showcasing his “Palimpsest” collection of wooden artworks at the Convento de Santo António in Loulé from September 21 to November 2.

This exhibition, curated by João Serrão, combines works created over the last 30 years in the artist’s studio in Loulé. The retrospective features works from his trips to India and Ladakh in the 90s, Moroccan-inspired woodwork and references to the travels of Portuguese navigators.

Holt’s work involves integrating diverse images to craft collages that prompt new discussions and collisions between images and texts. Collage enables the exploration of multiple layers of time and information, evolving into a complex tapestry of ideas.

Influenced by pop art, Dadaism, and surrealism, the artist combines seemingly disconnected images to create unlikely and mysterious encounters. In these, the relationship between image and text is explored through random visual poems.

“The walls of the Convent serve as a backdrop for the collages, creating a dynamic interaction between the images and the advertising posters. This visual and sound cacophony transforms the Convent space, usually silent, into an immersive and ephemeral experience”, highlights the municipality.

The exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10h00 to 13h30 and from 14h30 to 18h00.
