CHEGA has called for an urgent hearing of defence minister Nuno Melo following his comments over the weekend that perhaps young offenders (of minor offences) might be offered a stint in the Armed Forces rather than a custodial sentence in a penal / rehabilitation institution. Party leader André Ventura admits to being ‘concerned’ about the idea, as has the leader of Iniciativa Liberal. It cannot have been lost on Nuno Melo that Russia has been giving prisoners the choice of ‘going into the army’ rather than remaining behind bars. This idea of AD’s is pushing people’s buttons (the wrong way).
