CHEGA ‘outraged’ by President’s unscheduled trip to troubled neighbourhoods

Party prepares “formal complaint” for president’s “deplorable partiality”

The unscheduled visit by President Marcelo to neighbourhoods and families scarred by unrest following the police shooting last month of Odair Moniz has gone down badly with right-wing party CHEGA.

CHEGA wasted no time in accusing the president of acting “regrettably”, suggesting his decision showed “deplorable partiality”.

Skirting round the fact that the country’s head of state took pains to visit the local PSP police station, and that of firefighters, CHEGA claims that “no visit was made to the police officers involved (in the shooting) or to the victims of the violence perpetrated by these groups”.

To be fair, Marcelo would have been ill-advised to visit the police officers involved in the fatal shooting as they are both subject to official inquiries – and he could not visit the worst injured victim of the criminal rampages that followed, as the man is in no condition to receive visitors.

But CHEGA swerved around these points, declaring that the party will be delivering its formal complaint at 3.30pm on Wednesday (no doubt before a media presence).

The party’s protest will also “enter parliament”, says a statement released by CHEGA.
