Male guard is being “immediately returned” to Carregueira (male) prison
The chief prison guard removed from Tires women’s prison, where a strike has been called today, is suspected of “sufficiently serious offences” that have led to disciplinary proceedings, according to the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP).
In a statement to Lusa, the DGRSP said that “the removal of the chief guard of Tires Prison (is due to the fact that there are suspicions and indications serious enough to determine his immediate return to Carregueira prison, and disciplinary proceedings”.
“The disciplinary process is at the inquiry stage and therefore subject to secrecy,” added the directorate-general. The DGRSP’s Audit and Inspection Service (SAI) is in charge of the inquiry.
The guard in question – posted to Tires on a replacement basis after the retirement of the previous chief – returned to Carregueira prison, where he remains in office, as a prison guard, without managerial positions.
The offences detected during his one-month stint have not been explained beyond the fact that they are “sufficiently serious and grave” to justify his immediate removal.
As a result, however, of this decision, the National Union of Prison Guard Corps (SNCGP) called the strike which they say will run from today, April 22 until May 31. Their demands range from wanting more security to the return of the removed head guard.
Lusa news agency says it has contacted the union for further clarification, and is awaiting a reply.
According to an assessment by the union’s president, Frederico Morais, strike adherence was around 90% for the three shifts that went into service from midnight.
The protest is already affecting the prison’s functioning, namely recreation, the attendance of non-certified training, and the provision of non-contracted work by external companies.
