CHUA wins Angels Initiative platinum award for stroke care in the Algarve

The stroke care unit of CHUA – the Algarve’s State-run university hospital – has won an Angels Initiative platinum award for the quality of care offered stroke patients.

Supported by the European Stroke Organization (ESO), the award is given to units that achieve high levels of clinical quality and performance in stroke approach according to pre-established criteria and benchmarked through the Registry of Stroke Care Quality.

Said stroke unit coordinator Ana Paula Fidalgo, the award “is recognition of the commitment of all professionals who work daily on a multidisciplinary basis for patients, ensuring the best care”.

CHUA director Helena Leitão said the hospital was very happy to find itself internationally distinguished for quality care and the culture of continuous monitoring.

The Angels Initiative – launched by Boehringer Ingelheim in partnership with the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) and the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) – is to build a community of at least 1,500 stroke centres and ‘stroke ready’ hospitals to improve stroke care by improving acute stroke networks, treatment procedures and sharing knowledge with hospitals to set up stroke-units.

As data explains, in Europe every 30 minutes a stroke patient who could have been saved dies or is permanently disabled because they were not receiving the standard of treatment that a specialised stroke unit provides.
