Rain, cold weather, rough seas and strong wind all forecast
Portugal’s National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) has warned the population to take preventative measures due to worsening weather conditions over the next 48 hours, with rough seas, wind, rain and snowfall expected.
Based on forecasts from the National Meteorological Institute, IPMA, snowfall is expected over the next two days in the northern and central regions above 800/1,000 metres, as well as rough seas, with waves of up to seven metres on the west coast, which could reach maximum peaks of 11 metres.
Stronger wind is also forecast on the coast and in the highlands, with gusts of up to 80km/h.
Given the change in weather conditions, ANEPC is advising drivers to be extra cautious, with slippery road surfaces due to the possibility of ice, frost and snow accumulation.
ANEPC recalls that “the possible impact of these effects can be minimised, above all through the adoption of appropriate behaviour”. It recommends, among other things, paying extra attention to the most vulnerable groups, such as children in their first years of life, the chronically ill, the elderly or those who are more isolated, workers who are active outside and homeless people.
It also calls for the proper securing of loose structures, namely scaffolding, billboards and other suspended structures, and for caution when travelling and staying near wooded areas, due to the possibility of branches and trees falling due to stronger winds.
It also calls for special caution when travelling near the coastline and riverside areas that are historically more vulnerable to coastal flooding, by avoiding travelling and staying in these places.
“Do not engage in activities related to the sea, such as sport fishing, water sports and walks along the seafront, avoid parking vehicles too close to the seafront, adopt a defensive driving style and avoid driving on roads affected by snow,” the civil protection authority adds.
