Climate activist fined €1,600 for throwing green paint over future PM

Courts continue to hand down tough sentences on climate protestors

Continuing with the tough sentences delivered to hands-on climate activists, Lisbon’s local small crimes court has ordered a 19-year-old who threw green paint over the then future prime minister at a trade fair in Lisbon a total of almost €3,000.

The fine comes in two parts: €1,600 for damaging the clothes of Luís Montenegro and Isabel Santiago, a photographer from the CDS-PP party, and €1,485 for compensation to both: €958 for Luís Montenegro, and €527 to Santiago.

Vicente Fernandes, acting as he was at the time for the Student Climate Strike, was also found guilty of two offences of criminal damage (but acquitted of another, relating to the clothing of the police officer who arrested him).

The condemnation follows similar ‘tough rulings’ on actions promoted by activists in and around the capital which, it has to be said, have since cooled considerably.

Jornal de Notícias reports that the compensation to be paid to Luís Montenegro is less than the €1,750 he was asking for, and relates to €699 for the suit, €130 for the shirt and €129 for shoes also stained in the attack.

According to Lusa, the fine/ compensation includes interest for late payment. The incident happened on March 10, 2024 at the entrance to Lisbon’s FIL. ND
