Climate of insecurity and acts of vandalism prompt surprise visit by minister to Matosinhos

CCTV cameras promised – but no extra police numbers

The climate of insecurity and acts of vandalism prevalent in Matosinhos, in the north, near Porto, have long been in the headlines – and yesterday saw a ‘surprise visit’ to the area by minister for interior administration Margarida Bastos, the upshot being that the government will ensure the installation of CCTV cameras requested three months ago.

SIC television news has reported on Ms Bastos visit, following numerous reports in different media outlets about the rising tide of crimes in Matosinhos.

The cameras will also cover Norteshopping, a complex plagued by vandalism and where a young man was stabbed to death recently in an unprovoked attack.

Mayor Luísa Salgueiro highlights the importance of the CCTV cameras as a deterrence to the insecurity that has been plaguing her municipality. However, the government for the time being is not planning on increasing police numbers in the area. Ms Bastos said the solution pro-tem is to maintain permanent contact with municipalities suffering these kind of problems, and to “respond to communities’ feelings of insecurity” on the basis of further discussions.

The town has asked for more police in various areas, not least the ‘marginal’, alongside the beach, and in and around various condominiums.
