The “Sagres without rubbish” event kicks off this Saturday, June 1, at 10h00 next to the Pousada de Sagres.
A group of Algarve climbing associations is organising a cleaning drive this Saturday, June 1, between Ponta da Atalaia and Ponta da Baleeira in Sagres (Vila do Bispo), an area where a rise in the amount of litter has been observed.
The SAGRES SEM LIXO! (Sagres without rubbish) initiative, organised by Vertical – the ADR Climbing Centre – will kick off with a first drive at 10h00 near the Pousada de Sagres. The afternoon drive is scheduled to start at 15h30 next to the Forte do Belixe.
“The objective is to bring together the climbing community with public and private entities, local associations and the general public in a joint action to remove the large amount of rubbish accumulated at the top of some of the most emblematic cliffs in Sagres, where rock climbing is practised”, says the organisation on the event’s website.
“In addition to cleaning, our goal is to raise awareness […] about the benefits of climbing. This includes its role in driving local economic development, preserving the natural environment, and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for residents”.
According to Vertical, the 2023 cleaning drive on the Sagres cliffs resulted in the removal of 360kg of glass, 120kg of plastic, and unsorted rubbish.
Those interested in taking part on Saturday are asked to bring gloves, bin bags, water, and snacks to fuel them through the day. Participation is free, but registration is mandatory and can be done here or via email at vertigoclube@gmail.com.
