Clínica Vivina Cabrita, a reference in ophthalmology in Portugal’s southern region, is strengthening its position as a centre of excellence in healthcare in the Algarve by introducing an innovation in skin care – teledermatology. This new service is designed to respond to a problem felt throughout the region – long waiting lists, arising from the growing demand for dermatology appointments and the inability of health centres to provide timely responses.
This service is the result of a partnership with the company that implemented teledermatology in Spain in both public and private clinics and hospitals more than two years ago. Currently, around 1,100 consultations are carried out every week, and teledermatology has proved to be an effective tool in solving the same problem in our neighbouring country, speeding up access to dermatology appointments and reducing the delays faced by Spanish patients.
Teledermatology does not replace a traditional dermatology consultation, but it is an additional tool that allows you to quickly, and more affordably, seek the opinion of a dermatologist on a symptom or lesion that is causing concern, and that otherwise would take longer to get an opinion on. In most clinical situations, the response time is crucial and can make all the difference.
Implementing this service not only allows appointments to be booked more flexibly, eliminating the need to have a dermatologist available at that exact moment, but also simplifies the consultation process. An anamnesis (a patient’s account of their medical history) and an objective examination with a dermatoscope are carried out by qualified staff, and the dermatological assessment is then carried out by a dermatologist. The consultation report is prepared and sent within 48 working hours. All the doctors who provide this service are dermatologists registered with the Portuguese Medical Association, with experience and international prestige in the field of teledermatology.
This innovative service is also available in the municipality of Silves, at the Messines Medical Centre, which thus expands the range of consultations and services it offers its users, while always focusing on excellence and proximity to patients in that region.
By making teledermatology available in Portugal, Clínica Vivina Cabrita aims to provide faster and more effective access to dermatological care. Considering that the Algarve is a region susceptible to high levels of sun exposure, regular visits to the dermatologist are advisable and whenever you detect a change in the shape, colour or size of a mole.
