Scientists from the University of Coimbra (UC) are studying the brains of newborn babies to understand how biological sex influences neurodevelopment and susceptibility to infections, the institution has announced today.
“This research builds on clues from previous scientific studies, which revealed a greater male susceptibility to conditions such as sepsis, a deregulated and generalised immune response of the body to an infection that can lead to organ damage and which, if not treated quickly, leads to multiple organ failure and death,” said the UC in a statement.
The team of researchers aims to “better understand this process and pave the way for new therapies that can prevent health complications in the first days of life”
