Colombian smuggler arrested in Póvoa de Varzim

Diego Buitrago, 62, one of Colombia’s most notorious smugglers, has finally been run to ground in Póvoa de Varzim, where he had been living ‘in hiding’ for the last few months. The dual Spanish-Colombian national was reportedly ‘on the run’ from authorities in Spain who were being pressured by Colombian authorities to extradite him. According to Colombia’s president Gustavo Patro, Buitrago is the presumed leader of a “gigantic network of counterfeit Chinese contraband” that has been flooding the United States, Asia and Europe. He is now in preventive custody awaiting extradition.
