A complaint (that many would have labelled pedantic in the extreme) against the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Gouveia e Melo, for NOT ruling out a candidacy to the Presidency of the Republic ‘in the future’ has been archived. The reason for the complaint is that ‘military duties’ do not allow involvement in politics. It was quite clear, during the interview, that the Admiral was talking in an abstract form on what might happen in a future when he was no longer in the Navy. As reports have stressed, “with this decision, Gouveia e Melo maintains margin not to exclude a possible candidacy to Belém in the future”. This is an extremely sensitive subject in that some reports have inferred that President Marcelo is against the idea of Gouveia e Melo taking up where he must leave off in 2026 – a situation that the president has since refuted.
