An important step has been taken towards the construction of a new, “desperately needed” cemetery in Portimão.
The state’s official newspaper Diário da República has announced the opening of the public discussion period concerning the ‘Plano Pormenor da Quinta do Malheiro’, the detailed plan for development in the northern community of Malheiro in Portimão where the new cemetery will be built.
The project is considered a “priority” by local mayoress Isilda Gomes who told Correio da Manhã tabloid that the current cemetery is completely full.
As soon as the ‘Plano de Pormenor’ is approved, the council will launch a tender for the construction of the new cemetery.
Isilda Gomes did not want to commit to a date but said she will do everything possible to start construction next year. The works will cost between €2 million and €3 million, she said.
Portimão’s current cemetery dates back to the 19th century and is located right in the heart of the town, making any kind of expansion works impossible.
The plan also foresees the expansion of the Al-Vita continued care centre, the construction of a new pavilion for the Lar da Criança association and a new area for the construction of a hotel.
