Convicted rapist arrested in Loulé after 10 years on the run

Man escaped house arrest and evaded authorities for nearly one decade

PJ police have announced the arrest in Loulé of a 46-year-old man convicted of rape who had been on the run from authorities for nearly 10 years.

The crime dates back to August 9, 2014, involving a woman aged 64 at the time.

“The victim was approached and restrained using physical force, and subsequently dragged to a secluded location where she was sexually assaulted,” PJ police say in a statement to the press.

The man was arrested nearly two months later following a PJ police investigation, which saw him held under preventive custody at first. However, he was later placed under house arrest with electronic surveillance, which he violated by escaping and evading authorities until now.

The police statement says that the man is due to be heard in court and will be remanded in custody.
