Cortelha celebrates traditional pastry

Sweet || The small inland village of Cortelha in Loulé will be hosting a gastronomic festival on September 6 to celebrate one of Portugal’s favourite pastries – the ‘filhó’.
While there are many different ‘filhó’ recipes, the pastry is usually made with flour and eggs – and sometimes pumpkin – deep fried in olive oil or other vegetable oils and then sprinkled with sugar and/or cinnamon.
It is often associated with the Christmas season although it is also eaten all-year round.
At the festival, visitors will be able to taste the many different types of filhó, while enjoying the event’s short but sweet entertainment programme.
Festivities kick off at 3pm with a target shooting tournament followed by a dance at 6pm and a presentation by the Grupo Etnográfico de Quelfes at 10pm which will show visitors the Algarve’s dancing and singing traditions.
There will also be a ‘Sueca’ card game tournament taking place the following afternoon.
Still, it is the ‘filhó’ that is the star of the event organised by the Cortelha Friends’ Association with the support of the local council of Loulé, the parish council of Salir, the regional tourism board (RTA), INATEL and Algar.
Admission is free.
