Council encourages restaurants to use Castro Marim salt

Castro Marim council is committed to promoting the municipality’s ‘white gold’ and is offering to provide local restaurants with locally produced salt and fleur de sel in order to do so.

The council says that “dozens of restaurants have already joined the initiative which shows that they recognise the quality of the salt and fleur de sel produced in Castro Marim”.

Salt production is one of the most traditional economic activities in the municipality. It is collected by hand from the salt pans of Castro Marim.

“Substituting industrial salt for traditional salt and fleur de sel is one of our goals, as our salt is naturally superior in terms of minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium,” says Castro Marim mayor Filomena Sintra, adding that the town’s salt is in the process of obtaining a DOP seal – (Denominação de Origem Protegida, or Designation of Protected Origin).
