Countdown begins for Olhão’s seafood festival

Seafood lovers have started counting the days until the start of Olhão’s ‘Festival do Marisco’, the town’s biggest and most popular gastronomic event.

Beginning on Tuesday, August 9, the six-day festival will feature “fresh seafood and shellfish from Ria Formosa” as well as a vast concert programme.

One of the novelties is that ticket prices will be lower, costing €5 except on August 12 and 14, when they will cost €8.

“We want to stop the festival from becoming an ‘elite’ event, and return it to its more local roots,” Olhão mayor António Pina said at the festival’s presentation last week.

Although the event’s budget was cut from €600,000 to €500,000, Pina guarantees the quality of the event will remain the same.

“We will have the same quality shellfish and seafood that will be cooked like only the Olhão people know how to, and which attracts so many people to the town year after year.”

Performers this year include Áurea (August 9), Expensive Soul (10), Os Azeitonas (11), C4 Pedro (12), Camané (13) and Xutos & Pontapés (14).
