Beja court today sentenced the couple charged with the murder of an elderly German couple to 22 years in prison, each – almost the maximum jail term allowed under Portuguese law. The president of the panel of judges said that the court “ has no doubt that it was the two of them who killed these people” and ruled that the two crimes of murder and one of theft that they had been charged with were proven. In addition to the 22-year prison sentence, the two defendants were also ordered to pay €30,000 in compensation to a daughter of the couple for non-pecuniary damage. As they left the court, in statements to journalists, lawyers for the defendants intimated that their clients intend to lodge appeals.
