Court strikes are here to stay, warns union following meeting with minister

President of the Judicial Staff Union, António Marçal, has come out of the first meeting with the new minister of Justice vowing that strikes in the country’s courts “are here to stay”.

The reason being that ‘nothing new’ has come from the government changing its political colours.

Yes, there is “goodwill, knowledge of the situation, the affirmation that the government is committed to finding a solution, but of the solution that we pointed out – which is the emergency solution that is needed to avoid the closure of courts – the minister said that she is not yet in a position to take it on, and a next working meeting was scheduled, which has no date.

This will lead us to effectively maintain our fight,” he told reporters. Court staff have been staging strikes and work to rules for over a year, which has “caused the postponement of thousands of proceedings and procedural acts”, writes Lusa.
