CR7’s ‘new World Cup Mercurial boots’ go on sale today

Today’s the day that hundreds of thousands of parents of football-loving boys may be dreading: the latest ‘must-have’ football boots – inspired by Portuguese living legend Cristiano Ronaldo – will be available in select stores at fairly eye-watering prices.

The de luxe boots retail, depending on shoe size, from €185 to €295.

Christened ‘Born Leader’, the Mercurial Superfly 360 Elite CR7s come in what’s termed “hyper jade” and have the Portugal team captain’s ‘C’ woven on the side.

Whether they can help the 34-year-old dodge the wrath of the Spanish tax man (click here) remains to be seen, but he is due to wear them for the first time tomorrow (Friday) when Portugal’s team plays a friendly against Egypt.

Released by Nike, the boots are “chapter six in the series of signature Cristiano Ronaldo boots and have been “designed to complement the national team’s colours”.

They may also be the last boots in this range (who knows?). Even in the publicity blurb, the pin-up sporting icon admits “I am one of the oldest players…” before going on to add: “with more caps, more goals, more everything. I like to lead by example”.

Nike are clearly hoping that lots of aspirant young football stars will want to follow, proudly wearing replicas of their hero’s fantastical boots.
