Deputy mayor stays put after being cited in corruption investigation

Paulo Ferreira, deputy mayor of Valongo borough council, is staying at his post in spite of being made an official suspect in a corruption investigation involving a property developer and a director of McDonalds. The case centres on the developer allegedly sponsoring a municipal sports club, obtaining in return “as a kickback” from Ferreira “facilities and speed” in the urban licensing of a McDonald’s restaurant. McDonald’s have already suspended their director until the situation has been clarified, but the PS district office of Porto says it has “total confidence” in Paulo Ferreira, who is a candidate for re-election in the upcoming municipal elections.
