Cacela Velha pays homage to Moorish past
For three days in July, the charming seaside village of Cacela Velha will be exploring its Moorish past with another edition of ‘Noites da Moura Encantada’ (Nights of the Enchanted Moorish Maiden).
“The sounds, scents, colours, and traditions of the Mediterranean return to Cacela Velha. For three days, the nooks and crannies of this picturesque village promise to transport visitors to the fascinating world of One Thousand and One Nights, providing a unique cultural experience in a stunning setting,” organisers say.
With the region’s famous Ria Formosa as the backdrop, the event will be revisiting times when the “Moorish population held an important weight in the south of the territory,” having left “marks which are still present in habits, customs and landscapes”.
The event, taking place between July 12 and 14, will feature a variety of activities and shows which promise to “delight visitors of all ages.” Doors will open every day at 6pm, when visitors will be able to start exploring the ‘souk’, a market of artisans selling “unique and traditional products.”
Food lovers will also have a lot to look forward to, with a variety of Mediterranean dishes being served at the event.
Throughout the evenings, Moroccan artisans will be showcasing their crafts live for all to see, while an exhibition of “musical instruments from the Arab world” will also be on display. Additionally, Arabic percussion workshops will be held at Cacela Velha’s Largo da Fortaleza, where participants can learn and engage with the vibrant rhythms of Arabic music.”
Visitors will also have the opportunity to be “enchanted by performances and workshops of oriental dance, showcasing the skills and grace of the dancers at Largo da Fortaleza.” There will also be live music with the ‘Music of Al-Andalus’ show at the main church of Cacela, performed by Emilio Villalba and Sara Marina, who will take audiences “on a sonic journey through Arab history and culture.”
Street entertainment is another pillar of the event, with several artists and musicians bringing the village’s streets to life. Say organisers, the groups El Laff and Al Maram will “blend music and oriental dance”, while Bacisko Susso brings “Afro-Arabic melodies with the kora (a West African musical instrument) to the Cacela Cistern.” Another highlight will be the sunset performances at the churchyard.
The event is organised by Vila Real de Santo António Council along with Ibérica – Events and Shows, and ADRIP – Association for the Defense of the Heritage of Cacela.
Admission is free.
