An impressive number of dolphin and whale sightings were registered off the coast of Portimão in 2017, with a total of 10 species being spotted.
One company has reported having sighted cetaceans over 98% of the times that it set out to sea with that purpose.
In a total of 487 trips by Ferragudo’s Wildwatch, only eight did not result in some form of sighting.
Common dolphins were the most spotted species (350), followed by bottlenose dolphins (143) and minke whales (23).
Also on the list are the harbour porpoise (11), Risso’s dolphin (8), orca (6), fin whale (3), pilot whale (3), striped dolphin (1) and humpback whale (1).
Most of the sightings happened in August (124) and July (97).
Dolphins and whales can be spotted frequently off the coast of the Algarve. Many companies offer trips to see them.
