Fully woken up now to the predicament of many immigrants who travel to Portugal in search of work, SIC television news has found “dozens” of young men from Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria” living in rudimentary tents under a bridge in Porto. The city council has said the situation has been referred to borders and foreigners agency SEF (currently in the process of extinction), while SEF has not responded to SIC’s questions. The 30 or so immigrants say they have nowhere else to go, and that they are “desperate for help”. It is not even clear whether these immigrants entered the country legally, or whether they are some of the ‘boat people’ who arrived in the Algarve over various months and subsequently went missing.
