Three people in serious condition; others being transported to hospital
A collision today between a bus and a heavy goods vehicle near Cruz do Campo, in the municipality of Cartaxo, caused at least 40 injuries, a source for Civil Protection source has said.
Of these, three are in a serious condition and other people are still being assessed at the scene.
Initially, the number of injured had been put at 27.
According to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority’s website, 101 personnel from various fire brigades have been mobilised to the scene on the EN3 national road, supported by 47 vehicles and a helicopter.
The injured are being transported this far to Santarém Hospital.
The alert for this accident came at 14:23 and the road was still closed in both directions at 5pm.
SIC Notícias has been updating reports, suggesting that the HGV was a goods vehicle and the bus was actually carrying workers of the Jerónimo Martins food distribution/ retail chain.
The accident happened at something of a ‘blackspot’ where other accidents have happened before, Cartaxo mayor João Heitor has told SIC. He described the place as a “bend with some danger”.
SIC adds that none of the seriously injured are “at risk of life”. One is the driver of the goods vehicle, who had to be cut free from the wreckage. ND
