A man died after his vehicle veered off the A22 motorway in the Algarve on Sunday afternoon and onto a municipal road in Loulé, a Civil Protection source told Lusa news agency.
The accident happened when the driver was approaching a curve, Correio da Manhã tabloid reports. It is believed the driver lost control of the car, which veered off the motorway and onto the 1296 municipal road.
The man, who according to CM was in his 50s, was the vehicle’s only occupant and had to be extricated in an operation involving 27 operatives assisted by 10 vehicles.
Authorities were alerted to the accident, which took place in Campina de Baixo in Loulé, at 5.24pm. An investigation to determine the cause of the crash is underway.
