The dropout rate after the first year of a degree has risen again in public higher education institutions, standing at 11.73%, according to data released today, showing it is in polytechnics that students drop out the most. The data, published on the Infocursos portal, shows the situation after one year of students entering higher education in 2021/2022 and confirms the upward trend in dropouts in public higher education. In 2022/2023, 11.73 per cent of the previous year’s intake were no longer in any higher education institution, 0.13 percentage points more than in the 2021/2022 academic year. This increase was mainly due to polytechnic institutes, where the dropout rate after the first year rose from 13.26% to 13.88%. Universities, on the other hand, managed to turn the tide, with fewer students dropping out last year: 9.39 per cent compared to 9.83 per cent in 2021/2022.
