The southern Spanish region of Andaluzia, bordering the Algarve/ Alentejo, is experiencing an “extreme situation” of drought and insists it needs water from Portugal. Juan Manuel Moreno, president of the autonomous Spanish region, is also calling for European aid, pointing out that Andaluzia is not just one of Spain’s main tourism areas, it also produces food through agriculture for 500 million people in several countries. “We are in an extreme situation,” he told the ‘Drought Experts Commission’, suggesting the area needs more transfers between Spanish rivers, and transfers “between countries”, namely Portugal. He did not refer to the fact that southern Portugal is also in an extreme situation of drought.
