Rural parish in Loulé to boast long-awaited water and sewage system
At long last, the wait is over for the residents of Sobradinho, Alfeição, and Lagoa de Momprolé. The municipal council of Loulé has announced a major investment of over €3.7 million to bring water and sewage systems to these rural villages in São Sebastião parish.
With construction set to begin in the coming days, this ambitious project is seen as vital for the populations of these villages, made up of mostly scattered properties, many relying on private wells and outdated water system.
The project’s main endeavour will be the construction of a new water reservoir in Alfeição, which will ensure a reliable supply of potable water year-round. Also planned are 20 kilometres of water supply pipelines and 14 kilometres of wastewater drainage networks.
Works are due to last two years, provided no unexpected hurdles arise, says Loulé mayor Vítor Aleixo.
“The day has finally come. This is an important moment for many people who have waited for years,” he declared at the contract-signing ceremony on Wednesday (January 22).
The mayor expressed his gratitude to the municipal construction department, praising their “exceptional efforts” despite the many challenges faced over the years.
Analídio Ponte, president of the São Sebastião parish council, pledged his full collaboration to see the project successfully completed.
“This has been a longstanding demand from residents, who have endured years of inadequate and low-quality water supply,” he said, adding that the works will improve their quality of life and increase property values.
