Early morning PSP police ‘swoop’ arrests three for Lisbon rioting

Riots scarred areas around capital following PSP killing of Odair Moniz

Portugal’s PSP police force has detained three people this morning in an operation that at 8am was still underway in the Greater Lisbon neighbourhoods of Oeiras and Amadora connected to the riots and ‘tumults’ that followed the fatal shooting of Cape Verdean national Odair Moniza, in the Cova da Moura neighbourhood of Amadora.

According to information provided to Lusa news agency by Thó Monteiro, a commissioner from the PSP’s Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) while on the ground in the Portela neighbourhood (Loures municipality) the operation was aiming to carry out seven house searches and four arrest warrants.

The searches include other objectives unrelated to the riots and robberies that took place in the complicated days following Moniz’s death.

The three arrests already made went ahead in Portela, in Carnaxide, in Oeiras municipality, and in other neighbourhoods in Oeiras and Amadora.

The three have been taken to Porto Salvo police station where they are to face their initial questioning.

Two young men believed to have been involved in one of the worst incidents of the riots are already behind bars, awaiting trial for attempted murder, arson and failure to give assistance. ND
