EDP ‘CMEC corruption’ trial starts with defence arguing charges are baseless

After years in which the alleged crimes in this case have been plastered over the media, the EDP ‘CMEC corruption case’ has finally begun, with the defence arguing that the charges are ‘baseless’, and public prosecutors alleging defendants ripped the state and energy consumers off to the tune of over a billion euros. In the hotseat are former EDP board directors António Mexia and João Manso Neto, former economy minister Manuel Pinho and various others. This is an investigation that goes so far back most people have forgotten what it is about.
