Egyptian jeweller, wanted in Cairo over alleged €1.8 million fraud, arrested in Lisbon

An Egyptian jeweller described as ‘on the run from Cairo due to a fraud involving 32 kilos of gold’ has been ‘run to ground’ in Lisbon on the back of an international arrest warrant. The 31-year-old recently arrived in Portugal from Egypt with his Brazilian girlfriend, the idea being that the pair would then travel on to Brazil (where there are few extradition agreements with other countries). He is now in preventive custody awaiting extradition to Egypt. According to a brief summary on the PJ website, the man is understood to have deceived 18 people into delivering gold items which he said he would melt down and create new jewellery. The alleged fraud has been estimated at netting the suspect with €1.8 million.
