Albufeira presented a strategy to rethink its approach to tourism just two months ago
Eight British tourists were identified by GNR police in Albufeira last weekend after they were filmed naked in broad daylight at a local bar.
Videos of the raunchy behaviour have been shared on social media, showing several naked men in line, crawling on their knees, on top of a bar counter.
The footage has already sparked harsh criticism from local mayor José Carlos Rolo, who has spearheaded the municipality’s attempt to rethink its approach to tourism.
“It doesn’t make sense for us to have a strategy and spend money on promotion only to have these deeply negative incidents that dignify no one,” the mayor told SIC.
A complaint was filed with GNR police which were unable to catch the group in the act. Nonetheless, eight men were identified, and the case was forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Local business owners and associations contacted by SIC were unavailable for comment, noting that the “situation is complex” and that hotels also need to be involved in finding solutions.
While the local council recognises that nightlife will always be important for Albufeira, José Carlos Rolo is calling on bar owners to take measures against these kinds of incidents, such as changing their opening hours.
The local authority will also request a meeting with the Minister of Internal Administration to ask for increased policing in the town, adding that there are legal matters that need clarification so that the police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office can effectively bring cases of “excessive behaviours” such as these to court.
This incident comes just two months after the council presented a strategy to attract new tourists and establish itself as “the best Sun and Sea tourism destination in Portugal” while also diversifying what it has to offer tourists. The strategy is based around continuing to promote Albufeira as a destination known for its beaches and nightlife, but also one that has much more to offer.
