Elderly driver killed after driving against oncoming traffic on A25 motorway

Yet another elderly driver died this week after incorrectly joining one of the country’s motorways and driving against oncoming traffic. This particular tragedy took place on the A25 in Albergaria-a-Velha, in the Viseu-Aveiro direction, at 1.20pm yesterday. The head-on collision left the driver incarcerated in her vehicle, and badly damaged the van that was travelling in the correct direction, leaving its young driver requiring hospital treatment (but not seriously injured). Firefighters and traffic investigators are now trying to discover how and why the elderly driver will have made such a devastating manoeuvre. Situations of elderly drivers dying at the wheel after similar mistakes are not uncommon in Portugal where there are upwards of 180,000 drivers over the age of 80 – the vast majority of them being men.
