The much-needed roadworks on the EN125 road between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António will have to wait … again. This time, the delay follows an appeal made by the government against a court decision that prevented a change to the public-private partnership deal with concession company Rotas do Algarve Litoral.
If the appeal is unsuccessful, the government will have to decide on the next course of action, Infrastructure Minister Pedro Nuno Santos revealed in parliament on Tuesday.
There are two options on the table: renegotiating the contract (again) or taking over the works once and for all.
These bureaucratic hurdles have left local residents fuming. The renovations on the western section of the EN125 were completed around a year-and-a-half ago but the works on the eastern section remain on the backburner.
Castro Marim mayor Francisco Amaral says the road is in a “miserable state”.
