Entities defend urgency of Ria Formosa dredging

The purpose of the operation is to ensure water renewal, oxygenation of sediment, upkeep of navigation channels, and protection of natural habitats.

The Olhão City Council held a meeting this Wednesday to address the topic of Ria Formosa dredging. Present at the meeting were key individuals including the Secretary of State for Fisheries, the Regional Coordination and Development Commission, the Portuguese Environmental Association, the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests, the General Directorate of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services and Docking.

The municipal president of Olhão, António Miguel Pina, called for a meeting to address the concerning issues of siltation in the estuary and the lack of sand on Praia da Fuseta’s dune area.

The aim was to comprehend both the intended dredging sites and the exact spots where the dredging is scheduled to happen. This operation is an essential measure to guarantee water renewal, sediment oxygenation, maintenance of navigation channels and the safeguarding of natural habitats.

A unanimous decision was reached by the entities present to unite and start dredging without delay. Along with depositing the dredged materials in the immersion polygons, it was also mutually decided that these materials would be utilized to strengthen the dune cordon.
