Environmentalists label government ‘hasty’ for relaxing water restrictions in Algarve

Showing that it is almost impossible to make everyone happy, environmentalists have reacted to the government’s decision today to ease water restrictions in the Algarve claiming it is “precipitous” and “unjustified”– bearing in mind the risks the region will run in only a few months’ time, and the ‘dire messaging’ earlier this year that the region only had enough water to last until the end of the year. Greatest concerns, understandably, are that restrictions are easing just in time for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers who may be completely unaware of the parlous state of the southern territory’s dams and aquifers.
