Escaped prisoner to serve time in Italy before returning to Portugal

One of the five escapees from Vale de Judeus jail last year, recaptured in Italy in December, is to serve time in that country, and so won’t be returning to Portugal for the time being anyway.

Shergili Farjiani, the Georgian detainee found by Italian authorities in Padua, northern Italy in December, “is accountable to the Italian justice system”, explains a source for the Public Prosecutor’s Office. It transpires that he was “already part of criminal groups dedicated to property crimes” in Italy.

Right now, only Fernando Ferreira, who was recaptured in November in the municipality of Montalegre, is back behind bars in this country.

All the others, recaptured outside the country, have not yet been transferred to Portugal. Argentine Rodolfo Lohrman, 59, and Briton Mark Roscaleer, 35, are still being held in Spain as ‘the procedures for executing (extradition) warrants are underway’.

Fábio Loureiro, who was arrested in Morocco in October last year, is awaiting an ‘administrative/political’ decision from Morocco so that he can be extradited to Portugal. Recent reports suggest he is desperate to get out of Moroccan hands, as his conditions of incarceration are very uncomfortable. ND
