Portugal’s former minister of the economy Manuel Pinho has lodged an appeal to the Lisbon Court of Appeal (TRL) against his 10-year prison sentence in the EDP case, calling for acquittal and pointing out “crass errors” in the ruling. Manuel Pinho became the first former member of a Portuguese government to be sentenced to jail for corruption in the ‘exercise of his functions’ – but he continues to refute all the crimes for which he was convicted, and few imagine he will ever see the inside of a jail cell.
