EXCLUSIVE: Cinema boss “destroyed” by fire in movie theatre

Businessman Carlos Matos has revealed how a fire last night (December 12) at his movie theatre in Lagos has left him feeling “destroyed”.

The blaze broke out in the downstairs foyer and travelled up the stairwell into the two theatres. Damage is worst in the downstairs area, but sensitive digital equipment is thought to have been seriously damaged, and windows were shattered. No casualties were reported.

The local entrepreneur who owns the Algarcine chain of cinemas in Portimão and Olhão only recently took over the Lagos theatres, investing more than €200,000.

Carlos Matos told the portugalresident.com that he hopes to rebuild as soon as possible. He said he had been hoping for good business over Christmas, with lots of films for children and school parties.

“Please tell people to go and see the movies we would have been showing in Lagos, in Portimão instead,” he told us. “This way, we can rebuild Lagos more quickly.”

Polícia Judiciária are investigating the cause of the fire.
