Family launch poignant appeal to find hit-and-run driver

16-year-old son “battling for life in hospital” with serious head injury

A family has launched a poignant appeal for information on the hit-and-run driver who left their son ‘sprawled out on the asphalt’ without even slowing down.

The 16-year-old suffered a serious head injury and is said to be battling for life in Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital.

The horror took place seconds after the boy alighted from a bus in Queluz, Sintra.

The driver of a grey Opel Zafira ‘overtook’ the bus, hitting the boy as he made to cross the road.

Eye-witnesses say the Opel “did not even brake”.

PSP police are now going through CCTV images to try and identify the vehicle, while the distraught family of 16-year-old Rodrigo just hope someone will come forward with information.

Police too would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, which happened on Wednesday morning, just before, in Avenida Miguel Bombarda, close to the Minipreço supermarket.

According to reports, Rodrigo was initially taken to the nearest hospital, Amadora-Sintra, but this requested his urgent transfer to Santa Maria shortly afterwards, because of the extent of his head injury.

The boy, a futsal player with a local club, is currently sedated, on a ventilator, in intensive care.
