Farense to play home matches against ‘Big Three’ at Algarve Stadium

Farense will play Sporting, Benfica and Porto at Algarve Stadium

Farense will play its home matches against Portugal’s ‘Big Three’ of Sporting CP, SL Benfica and FC Porto at the Algarve Stadium (Estádio do Algarve) instead of its home stadium of São Luís in Faro.

The announcement was made to season ticket holders during the club’s home loss against Moreirense on Sunday.

It’s a difference of millions (of euros), probably,” Farense president João Rodrigues told Lusa news agency last year, referring to the difference in capacity between the two stadiums. “If it is not (a difference of) €2 million, it is around €1.5 million, which for a club with a budget like Farense’s, makes a substantial difference.”

Estádio São Luís in Faro, where Farense plays most of its home matches, has a seating capacity of around 7,000, substantially below the 20,000 seats currently available at Estádio do Algarve.

Playing its home matches at a larger stadium against Portugal’s Big Three, which are known to practically fill up every smaller to medium-sized stadium they play at in the country, will allow Farense to significantly increase its ticket revenue, as its president explained.

Its first home game against one of the ‘Big Three’ is scheduled for Friday, August 23 against current champions Sporting CP.

Farense will play its remaining home matches at Estádio de São Luís, which welcomes an average of around 5,000 spectators per match.
