Faro airport police make €180,000 cocaine bust

Eagle-eyed police at Faro airport foiled an elaborate drug smuggling operation last week, netting 2.5 kilos of cocaine.

The drug, hidden away in a passenger’s luggage, had a street-sale value of around €180,000. It originated from Peru, was “high grade” according to a news report in Correio da Manhã, and transported by a 50-year-old Bulgarian drug mule who had started her journey in Brazil.

The paper went on to describe how the woman had already passed through Lisbon airport, but her stash remained undetected due to the fact that she didn’t pass through customs.

In Faro, she was meant to be collected by a driver, with the final destination being Madrid, in Spain.

But after various bags of white powder were found hidden away in the lining of her suitcase, the authorities were “unable to identify” the woman’s driver, and so made only one arrest.

The woman appeared before a court in Faro last Friday afternoon.
