Faro is finally getting a kennel for stray and abandoned animals. The announcement was made after the local council approved the launch of a tender for the construction of a “Centro de Recolha Oficial Animal” – which loosely translates to ‘official collection centre for animals’.
It will be located in an isolated area of Medronhal in Guilhim and aims to tackle an issue that the borough has been facing for “decades”.
The €1.2 million project involves building a kennel with a maximum capacity for 173 animals. Included will be an area “dedicated to animals which will be put up for adoption”, a quarantine area, 16 shared cat pens and 42 shared dog pens. There will also be two outdoor parks for the animals to play and exercise as well as a veterinarian clinic. Construction is expected to last 455 days.
In a statement to the press, Faro Council says that this is the latest measure in a long-running campaign to fight animal abandonment and mistreatment.
“In Faro, we have always treated animals with respect, even before the current (animal protection) legislation was approved,” said Faro Mayor Rogério Bacalhau.
As examples, the mayor cites the decision to stop hosting circuses which keep animals in captivity as well as the sterilisation campaigns promoted by the council.
